Changing Tides

One of the things
I’ve learned, while I was in
Student Council back in my
Undergraduate years, is
The importance of a
Stance.

You’re either on one side,
The other, or
Leaning a certain way, or
Even choosing to stay right down
The middle—
All are forms of a
Stance.

Let me quote some lines from
A dictionary (Merriam-Webster) on
Its definition:

“The way in which someone stands, especially when
Deliberately adopted.

The attitude of a person […] towards something.

(Climbing) A ledge or foothold on which a belay can be
Secured.”

At this point, I only want
To focus on the last one (as the prior two are fairly self-explanatory, I think). In particular,
Having a stance is
A foothold—something to keep you
Grounded, in what you believe is
Right.

Mind you, I said, what
You believe. While
Facts are an important aspect,
Commitment to your stance is
The actual battle.

When faced with
Adversity, do you
Bend, or do you
Break?

This is a lesson I have yet
To master, but one that will be
Tested and
Tried, particularly for
The career I hope to take.

Better late than never.

P.S. What are your thoughts on stances? How do you make them, or keep them? Feel free to share! 🙂
